Continued advances in information technology and “big data” are transforming biomedical research and healthcare delivery. The combination of huge datasets is providing new insights into disease processes, enhancing our ability to predict and/or prevent the prevalence of specific conditions and offering real time, point-of-care analysis of routinely collected health care information.

NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and Unit initiatives

The NIHR Imperial BRC is a partner in the national NIHR Health Informatics Collaborative (NIHR-HIC) programme, where routine healthcare information from NHS trusts is being collected and shared for research purposes. The programme has established a clinical data warehouse at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust bringing together data from discrete scientific themes including viral hepatology , ovarian cancer , renal transplantation, intensive care medicine and acute coronary syndromes. In addition, the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust are also leading a NIHR-HIC project on lung cancer together with the Imperial BRC. Imperial College is also leading the UK MEDical Bioinformatics partnership programme (UK MED-BIO) working in collaboration with NIHR Biomedical Research Units and Centres at the AHSC partners.

Data Science Institute

The Imperial College Data Sciences Institute (DSI) is a multidisciplinary hub working across all Imperial College Faculties with world-class data management capability, analytical tools, training and education programmes. The AHSC is utilising the expertise within the DSI to further extend the utility of the clinical information being collected within NHS organisations by combining NHS information with other research information in a regulatory compliant and secure environment. The resulting resource creates powerful new opportunities for AHSC researchers to develop personalised and population-level advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Healthcare apps

AHSC staff have also pioneered a number of innovative mobile healthcare apps that improve both the provision of healthcare services and support health management in everyday life.
